Harry Anderson's Palette - Casein

Harry Anderson (August 11, 1906 – November 19, 1996) was an American illustrator and a member of the Illustrator's Hall of Fame.

Anderson was also allergic to turpentine. Making it impossible for him to continue using that medium. He then switched to using casein. I thought it was an interesting substitution as the medium is described as having very similar handling as oils. I decided that it would be a great palette to include for someone wanting or needing to try a new medium. Currently there are water soluble oils on the market, which would also be perfect for someone with the same ailment.

According to Carmen Garrido, Head of Technical Services at the Prado Museum in Madrid and author of Velázquez: Tecnica y Evolución, Velázquez's palette consisted of the following colors:

It seems that Bouguereau purchased prepared colors in tubes, but on occasion he also ground certain colors himself. It is not known precisely which brand(s) of prepared colors Bouguereau used, but he did write an endorsement for the colors of Lefranc:
"I am pleased to have only good to say about the colors made by Messieurs Lefranc et Cie."

BRUSHES

Soft hair brushes are best for glazing : they allow a smooth and even layering of the color. Some of the best brushes for this application are ox hair flats, sable and squirrel hair (mix). All are available from Pearl Paint and Utrecht Art Supply in sizes ranging from 1/4" to 3".

Sable watercolor brushes have the best tips for rendering fine details, sizes range from 000 and up. Rekab produces a fine and inexpensive sable brush of this type available at Pearl.
